Oklahoma’s open race for the U.S. Senate got national attention this week as former EPA Chairman Scott Pruitt filed for the empty seat left by the retirement of U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe.
Pruitt, a former state senator from Broken Arrow and former Oklahoma Attorney General, was the EPA chief briefly after being appointed by former President Donald Trump.
Pruitt enters a crowded field for the GOP nomination that includes District 2 U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin, State Sen. Nathan Dahm and former Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon.
Luke Holland, former chief of staff for Inhofe, heads a list of lesser known Senate candidates that includes Alex Gray, Adam Holley, Jessica Jean Garrison, Laura Moreno, Michael Coibion, Paul Royse, John F. Tompkins and Randy J. Grellner.
Former Congresswoman Kendra Horn is the only Democrat who filed. Independent Ray Woods and Libertarian Robert Murphy will also be on the November ballot against the GOP primary winner.
The primary election is June 28.
Sen. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma, filed for another term and could face a stiff challenge from Pastor Jackson Lahmeyer in the GOP primary. Joan Farr is also a GOP candidate.
The Democrats who filed for Lankford’s seat are Jason Bollinger, Madison Horn, Any Azma, Brandon Wade, Dennis Baker and Jo Glenn. Michael L. Delaney is an Independent candidate and Kenneth D. Blevin will be the Libertarian candidate in the general election.
In the race for governor, Gov. Kevin Stitt will face three relatively unknowns – Mark Sherwood, Joel Kintsel and Moira McCabe – in the Republican primary.
State School Superintendent Joy Hofmeister, after being a lifelong registered Republican, has switched parties to being a registered Democrat so she could run against Stitt in the general election. But first she must defeat former legislator Connie Johnson in the Democrat primary.
Democrat Melinda L. Alizadeh-Fard and Libertarian Chris Powell are running against Republican Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell.
State Auditor and Inspector Cindy Byrd, Republican, will face Stephen W. McQuillen in the GOP primary. No one else filed.
Incumbent Attorney General John M. O’Conner is running against Republican Gentner Drummond and Libertarian Lynda Steele.
The State Treasurer office is an open seat and the GOP candidates are Todd Russ, former legislator Clark Jolley and David B. Hooten. The Democrat is Charles De Coune and the Libertarian is Gregory J. Sadler.
Since Hofmeister is term limited, the GOP race for State School Superintendent includes John Cox, April Grace, Ryan Walters and William E. Crozier. The Democrat is Jena Nelson.
Republicans Leslie Kathryn Osborn, Sean The Patriot Roberts and Keith Swinton are running for State Labor Commissioner. The Democrat is Jack Henderson and the Libertarian is Will Daugherty.
The open Corporation Commission seat drew Republicans including State Sen. Kim David, Porter; Justin Hornback, Harold D. Spradling and Todd Thomsen. Democrat Margaret Warigia Bowman and Independent Don Underwood also filed.
There are no races for District Court judge in Tulsa County except for District 14, Office 12 which drew Kevin Gray, Tanya Wilson and Todd Tucker, and District 14, Office 13, which has R, Kyle Anderson and David A. Guten.
Former state senator Ervin Stone Yen has left the GOP and will run as an Independent for governor. The Libertarian candidate is Natalie Bruno.
U.S. Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Oklahoma, did not draw a GOP opponent. He will face Democrat Adam Martin and perennial Independent candidate Evelyn Rogers.
Because Mullins is leaving his seat in the House to run for the Senate, 14 Republicans filed for the District 2 slot.
That includes State Rep. Avery Frix, R-Muskogee; State Sen. Marty Quinn, R-Claremore; Sen. Josh Brecheen, Coalgate; Rep. Dustin Roberts, R-McAlester; former State Rep. John Bennett (who recently was the state chairman for the GOP); former State Rep. David Derby, R-Owasso; and Guy Barker; Clint Johnson; Chris Schiller; Johnny Teehee; Rhonda Hopkins; Pamela Gordon’ Wes Nofire and Erick P. Wyatt.
The only Democrat in District 2 is Naomi Andrews and the Independent is Bulldog Ben Robinson.
U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Oklahoma, has two GOP primary opponents – Wade Burleson and Stephen Butler – in District 3. The only Democrat is Jeremiah Ross.
In District 4, U.S. Rep. Tom Cole will face James Taylor and Frank W. Blacke in the GOP primary and the winner will run against Democrat Mary Brannon.
District 5 Republican Rep. Stephanie Bice will face Subrina Banks in the primary and the winner will take on Democrat Joshua Harris-Till and Independent David K. Frosch.
In Tulsa County, Tulsa County District 1 Commissioner Stan Sallee, a Republican, will face Democrat challenger Sean Johnson. Both live in Collinsville.
District 2 is an open seat. The GOP candidates are Bob Jack, Margie Alfonzo and Kelly Dunkerly. No Democrat filed.
In the race for Tulsa County Assessor, Assessor John A. Wright, a Republican, drew Libertarian Todd Hagopian as his opponent.
The most active race in Tulsa for the Oklahoma House is in District 79 where Rep. Melissa Provenzano, a liberal Democrat, will face the winner of a GOP primary with Paul Hassink, Karen Gilbert and Stan Stevens.
Newcomer Mark Tedford, a Republican from Jenks, won the State House District 69 seat because no one else filed for the open seat.
Incumbents who were re-elected because no one filed against them include:
Insurance Commissioner Republican Glen Mulready; Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler; Tulsa County Treasurer John Fothergill; State Rep. Tom Gann; State Scott Fetgatter’ State Rep. Mark Lawson; State Rep. Jeff Boatman; State Rep. Lonnie Sims; State Rep. Monroe Nichols; State Rep. Regina Goodwin; State Rep. Mark Vancuren; State Rep. T.J. Marti; State Rep. John Waldron; State Rep. Meloyde Blancett; State Rep. Stan May and State Rep. Dean Davis.
