Anyone who has attended a University of Tulsa football game this season had to think that it was only a matter of time before TU would make a head coaching change. Some fans, in fact, on social media, were calling for the firing of Kevin Wilson after the fifth game of the season, when Tulsa lost, 52-20, to North Texas.

Tulsa Vice President and Director of Athletics Justin Moore announced on Sunday that Wilson was relieved of his duties effective immediately. Wilson’s firing came one day after Tulsa lost 63-30 at South Florida, and with one game left on the schedule. It was the Golden Hurricane’s ninth loss by more than 30 points over the past two seasons. In two seasons under Wilson, Tulsa went 7-16.

That loss at North Texas was followed by a 49-7 drubbing by Army at home the next week.

Even after Tulsa had a miraculous 46-45 comeback victory at home against UTSA on Oct. 26, there were plenty fans complaining about the play calling and lack of offense by the Hurricane in the first half.

There were a lot of questions about who the starting quarterback would be coming into this season, and it appears the coaching staff still hasn’t figured it out. There have been five different players who have filled the quarterback role this season for Tulsa. The inconsistent play at quarterback has been the bane of the Golden Hurricane’s lack of offense.

“With the rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics, we know the importance of positioning our football program and athletic department to thrive and excel in the upcoming years,” Moore was quoted in a press release. “Our standard will be to play in bowl games every season, compete for conference titles, and build a program that everyone connected to the Golden Hurricane will be proud of. Our national search for a new head coach begins today and I am confident that we will attract a strong pool of candidates who want to be at The University of Tulsa and who align with our vision for our football program.”

I have spoken with a couple of former TU football players who would like to remain anonymous, but they both told me a couple weeks ago the problem with the team was a coaching issue and that it really started at the top with Wilson. Neither could understand why he was still employed at this point of the season.

TU announced that former NFL wide receiver and current receivers coach Ryan Switzer will take over as interim coach. Tulsa will host Florida Atlantic on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Central.

IS GUNDY NEXT?

Many OSU fans are wondering if it’s time to part ways with former quarterback turned head coach Mike Gundy. Things haven’t been going well for the Cowboys this season, including the fact that they have not won a conference game yet.

Gundy’s outbursts and attitude have also been an issue, including his response to recent complaints by the Cowboys faithful.

There may be two college teams in the state looking for a new head coach in the coming weeks.
