At its July 2021 regular board meeting, the Tulsa Authority for Economic Opportunity (TAEO) approved four Affordable Housing Trust Fund grants to go to nonprofits to help landlords with unpaid rent and repairs. Those grants include:
- $50,000 to Tulsa CARES to create a Landlord Guarantee Fund
- $100,000 to Housing Solutions to create a Landlord Guarantee Fund and a Make Ready Team and a second grant of $50,000 for a Rental Assistance Program
- $500,000 to Restore Hope Ministries for the Emergency Rental Assistance program
The Affordable Housing Trust Fund is a citywide fund for production or preservation of affordable housing through affordable rental housing development, homebuyer assistance, landlord incentives, and rental assistance.
Kristin Maun, director of Housing Development and Incentives for TAEO, said, “Low-income tenants, especially those with a history of eviction, can experience barriers to accessing housing. Through landlord incentive programs, agencies can help tenants obtain safe, affordable housing while providing support for landlords who rent to low-income tenants.”
Tulsa CARES and Housing Solutions’ Landlord Guarantee Funds will reimburse landlords for unpaid rent, utilities and property damages. Tulsa CARES’ fund will help tenants living with HIV or Hepatitis C and the Housing Solutions’ fund will help tenants experiencing homelessness access safe, quality housing opportunities.
