Iowa State (2-11, 0-8) finally got most of their players healthy but it wasn’t enough to upset No. 12 Oklahoma Saturday in Norman.

OU was led by Austin Reaves and Brady Manek as the Sooners topped the Cyclones 79-72.

Iowa State made 16 of 31 3-pointers, but just 11 of 40 shots inside the arc.

“You saw big threes in the second half where the ball went side to side,” said ISU coach Steve Prohm. “And now we’re slowly starting to creep to being a high assist team. That’s the way we play. That’s the way you’ve got to play to be efficient on the offensive end.”

But Iowa State had no answer for Reaves, who scored 16 points with eight rebounds and eight assists.

Manek, who started for the first time since being out with the coronavirus, had nine points and a career-high 15 rebounds for the Sooners (12-5, 7-4 Big 12).

“His all-around game was terrific,” OU coach Lon Kruger said of Manek.  “I thought Brady really, really battled and worked at it then offensively made some good plays out of the double team in the post.  He rebounded the ball like crazy all day long. I was really happy for Brady to see him bounce back and have a game like that. He’s been making progress health-wise and it looks to me like he’s back now.”

“I knew I needed to play well inside today,” Manek said. “Sometimes you block out and the ball doesn’t come to you, and I felt like it was coming right to me today. It was weird. But all around, I think we did well. As a team, we rebounded well.”

Kruger knew ISU was better than their record.

“Obviously a hard fought (game) from the start,” said OU coach Lon Kruger. “I thought Iowa State played great. We didn’t do the job we needed to get into their three-point shooters and they made us pay for that. A lot of guys shot the ball well and they’ve got the big  young guy inside that who can hurt you.

“They’ve been hurt by COVID-19 more than anyone else in the conference by far in terms of playing games short-handed and I think they showed today how tough they’re going to be when they are healthy.”

OU has had games canceled this season with UCF and Florida games postponed with Oklahoma State (January 15 in Stillwater) and Baylor (February 10 in Norman).

The Sooners are scheduled to play OSU at Stillwater on February 25 at 8 p.m. on ESPN2/U and two days later in Norman on February 27 at 2 p.m. on ABC.
