After plowing through a tough schedule, Tulsa managed a 6-6 record and will represent the American Athletic Conference against Old Dominion of Conference USA in the Myrtle Beach Bowl at 1:30 p.m. December 20 on ESPN.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to continue our season at the Myrtle Beach Bowl against a very good Old Dominion football team,” said Tulsa coach Philip Montgomery. “We look forward to representing our University, the city of Tulsa and the American Athletic Conference in Myrtle Beach.”

The game is at Coastal Carolina’s Brooks Stadium. This is just the second year for the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Last year, Appalachian State beat North Texas, 56-28.

This will be the 23rd bowl appearance for TU. The Golden Hurricane have been in 12 bowls in the past 19 years. In seven seasons at TU, Montgomery has taken his team to four bowl games.

Tulsa and Old Dominion will meet for the first time. This is only the second time that Old Dominion has gone to a bowl. The Monarchs only started playing football in 2009 (TU started in 1895).

“Old Dominion has done such an outstanding job in building a solid foundation for its football program in such a short time since adding the sport and moving to the FBS level,” Montgomery said. “It should be a tremendous matchup between two teams that finished our regular seasons extremely strong.”

Old Dominion joined Conference USA in 2013. Their only other bowl appearance was in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl when they beat Eastern Michigan 24-20.

Tulsa is on a three-game winning streak with victories over Tulane, Temple and SMU. Old Dominion also has a 6-6 record and has won five games in a row.

Tulsa averages 436 yards of total offense (second in the AAC). The TU defense holds opponents to an average of 381 yards per game.

The Monarchs, coached by Ricky Rahne, finished the season in third place in the C-USA East Division with a 5-3 record. ODU has averaged 28.5 points and 385 yards per game, while the Monarchs defense has allowed just 28 points and 372 yards per game.

“We are thankful for the opportunity to play in the Myrtle Beach Bowl,” Rahne said. “This is the perfect spot for our fans to celebrate a fun season and gives our players a final chance to go 1-0.”
