Unable to get their offense going while committing several turnovers, the Tulsa Oilers indoor football team struggled in a 33-7 loss to the Fishers Freight, at the BOK Center on Saturday night.
The Oilers were off to a 6-2 start on the season but have lost four of their last five games and are now 7-6.
Fishers opened the scoring on their very first drive when quarterback Felix Harper connected with DJ Stokes in the endzone to give the Freight an early 7-0 lead.
Tulsa responded with a 10-yard touchdown run by Jerminic Smith to tie the game with 8:18 to go in the first.
Harper scored on a quarterback sneak into the end zone with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter to give the Freight the lead for good at 14-7. On the ensuing kickoff, Fishers’ kicker, Calum Sutherland, hit a deuce to make it 16-7. Two points are awarded to the kicking team if their kickoff passes through the uprights.
The Oilers were threatening to score with four minutes remaining in the second quarter, when Fishers’ Aaron Jackson came up big with the first interception of the night, stopping the Tulsa’s drive.
Both teams’ defenses played well in the scoreless second quarter with multiple sacks, plus missed field goals.
The Oilers were still within striking distance of the Freight and trailed by only nine points at halftime. Tulsa was still unable to get their offense on track in the second half.
Fishers scored 17 unanswered points in the second half, to secure the win.
The Oilers had another drive stopped in the third quarter by Jackson’s second interception of the game in the end zone. Jackson finished with three interceptions in the game.
With one minute left in the third quarter, Harper carried the ball into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night, extending the Freight’s lead to 23-7.
In the fourth quarter, Josiah King ran through the Oilers’ defense and into the end zone for a touchdown, putting the Freight ahead 30-7.
With three minutes left in the game, Sutherland kicked a field goal to close out the scoring for Fishers.
This was Tulsa’s second loss this season to the Freight. Fishers won the meeting between these two teams, 40-29, on April 4.
This is a bye week for the Oilers before they host Massachusetts on Saturday, July 12th. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. at the BOK Center.
