Tulsa basketball is the hottest game in town.
With one tenth of a second left Saturday, the Golden Hurricane’s Elijah Joiner hit a three-point shot and TU shocked No. 22 Wichita State, 54-51, in front of more than 8,000 screaming fans.
Tulsa has won six games in row.
The win, coupled with a loss by Houston, gave Tulsa (15-6, 7-1 in the American Athletic Conference) sole possession of first place in the AAC. Wichita fell to 17-4 overall and 5-3 in the AAC.
Tulsa’s defense set up the game winning shot by forcing a shot clock violation with three seconds left.
Joiner ended the game with a career-high 22 points, along with a career-best five 3-pointers made. Martins Igbanu was the only other Tulsa player in double-digits with 10 points.
WSU was led by center Jaime Echenique’s 15 points and 10 rebounds.
“We have a number of guys who can make plays and do some great things to help us win from a scoring standpoint. Today, Elijah, it was his day. Obviously he was outstanding and finished it off with the game-winner. He was terrific and we needed every point he got,” said Tulsa coach Frank Haith.
Joiner set a new career-high with 22 points, breaking his previous high of 19 points at Arkansas. Joiner also set a new career-high with five 3-pointers, bettering his previous high of 3 twice before.
It was the second time in less than two weeks that Tulsa had beaten a Top 25 team. TU trounced Memphis 80-40 on January 22. The last time Tulsa defeated two ranked teams in the same season was 2015-16 with a 77-67 win over No. 9 Wichita State and 82-77 road win at No. 16 SMU. Tulsa will be back at the Reynolds Center to host the UConn Huskies Feb. 6 with a 6 p.m. tipoff. Tulsa will then travel to Orlando, Florida, for a Sunday afternoon match-up with the UCF Knights.
