Tulsa School Superintendent Deborah Gist is mad as a wet hen over a decision by the State Board of Education to equalize funding between public schools and charter schools.
Gist and her buddies in the Oklahoma Education Association can never get enough money for their efforts to indoctrinate young students with their progressive agendas.
Even though Tulsa has seen a serious drop in attendance – both online and in class – Gist wants more and more money from the state, the federal government and even cities like Tulsa.
She and the OEA will never be satisfied.
They are convinced that giving more money to charter schools will strip away funds from public schools. Gist argues that this decision should have been made by the Legislature rather than the State Board of Education. That’s because the OEA can bully legislators – especially moderate Republicans – into diverting funds into public schools.
State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister, a liberal registered as a Republican, agrees with Gist and opposes the fair distribution of taxpayer dollars. Both Hofmeister and Gist publicly would say they want “all” students to get a good education but they also see charter schools as a threat. And it is not unusual for a charter school to outperform its public school counterparts.
Competition has a way of making things better and Oklahoma public education could sure use a boost.
“The state Board’s decision is a lawful solution to a problem that has existed for years and predates my time as governor,” Gov. Kevin Stitt stated.
He’s right. Gist, Hofmeister and the OEA are wrong once again. The result will be more equal funding and better educated students.
