There is currently a strong movement for people of faith to bring God into their workplace. This is not new, but glad we are seeing a change in the marketplace for believers in Christ.

I remember my father in his family practice medical office using his business as a place of worship. He believed that your work is the way you worship God, every day not just on Sundays. He had Christian literature including Bible’s and gospel tracts in his lobby for free to anyone who came in. He had Scriptures on the walls of his exam rooms and in the lobby. He prayed with his patients and offered free care to those who could not pay. His example has been part of the reason I have sought to bring God into every business I have been a part of.

The Bible gives us insight on how to do our work in the marketplace. “We must do the work of Him who has sent me, as long as it is day. For night is coming when no one can work.”

In the New Testament, Jesus made:

  • 132 public appearances – 122 were in the marketplace.
  • 52 parables that Jesus told – 45 had a workplace context.
  • 40 miracles in the Book of Acts – 39 were in the marketplace.

Work, in its different forms, is mentioned more than eight hundred times in the Bible – more than all the words used to express worship, music, praise and singing combined. Do not minimize your daily work – it is nothing less than a holy calling. God has you right where He wants you … right now! Remember, Jesus was a carpenter most of His adult life.

As Believers in Christ, we are uniquely positioned to bring God’s love into our workplace. We are to lead with love. God created us in His image and desires for us to be like Christ. As believers we are being transformed by the truth taught by Jesus as he served in the marketplace. The question we must ask ourselves is, do others see Christ in us … even at work?

If they are to see the difference, we must do what we say we are going to do. We were created for serving God. We are shaped to serve others, to be servant leaders. Are we playing marbles with diamonds God has given us?

The challenge is that we must live what we say we believe. Live aloud. Let Christ be seen in all you say and do. Some say, my life speaks, and I do not have to say a word. But our words should be spiced with the things of God, so there is not question what is important about the way you work, live and talk. “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”

The impression you make on others during the work week may be the primary impression they have about Christianity. I believe we must take full advantage of our time and influence to help those you work with know and follow God by following the example of Jesus.

I would like to encourage you to check out a local movement called 94Xmovement.org that is going global. There are great resources including a podcast and devotional daily to support the body of Christ in the marketplace.

Pray and ask God to help us to fully live out our faith in Jesus for all the world to see, and especially in the workplace where your co-workers have yet to believe and trust in Christ.
