Legislation filed by Sen. Nathan Dahm, R-Broken Arrow, would declare 2020 the “Year of the Bible.” That’s a wonderful move by a state senator. Few seem to remember Public Law 97-280. On October 4, 1982, President Reagan authorized and requested to designate 1983 as a “National Year of the Bible.”

Although it would be impossible to do this today with our present Congress, our wonderful state government can get this done in Oklahoma (even without tribal consent).

After reasons given for the passage of this Resolution (including a Presidential quote from years gone by that the Bible is “the Rock on which our Republic rests,” the final paragraph of the Joint Resolution reads: “Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that the President is authorized and requested to designate 1983 as a national ‘Year of the Bible’ in recognition of both the formative influence the Bible has been for our nation and our national need to study and apply the teachings of the Holy Scriptures.”
