With all due respect to Robert Wells and Mel Tormé, we present our version of The Christmas Song (commonly subtitled Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire). This song is a classic written in 1945 and first recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946. This sports fans version includes an opening verse that Tormé added in 1963, when he sang the song as a duet with Judy Garland on her Christmas Special.

The Sportsmas Song

All through the year we waited,

Waited for the snow to fall.

To hear whistles blowing, and umpires yelling ‘play ball.’

Any season is a season for all.

Baskets going in from three-point range,

Our pucks slipping in the net.

A chorus of boos being yelled at the refs

And folks hyped up like Sooner fans.

Everybody knows

some peanuts and some Cracker Jacks,

Help make a baseball game more fun.

Tiny tots with their hearts beating fast,

Anxious to get on the field and run.

They know that this is kiddie day,

Free food and a chance to get out and play,

And every other guy is gonna cry

If he gets hit with a ball in the eye.

So, I’m writing here this simple line

To sports fans big and little too,

Get your tickets in advance and online,

Merry Sportsmas to you.
