The proposition to legalize the medical use of marijuana was so poorly written that it has essentially legalized the recreational use of marijuana in Oklahoma.
A majority of Oklahomans thought they were approving the limited use of marijuana for a small group of patients who believed they could only get relief from marijuana.
The legalized use of marijuana has skyrocketed.
Proponents argued that taxes from “medical marijuana” would help the state budget and they were right.
Wow, they were right.
In the first year of the liberalized laws, Oklahoma’s medical marijuana tax of 7 percent, along with sales tax generated at licensed dispensaries, have added $41.3 million to gross receipts in the past 12 months. Of that, $18.1 million has come from the marijuana tax and $23.1 million from sales tax paid by dispensaries. In October alone, marijuana sales generated $6.8 million, including $3 million from the medical marijuana tax and $3.8 million in sales tax from dispensaries.
The figures indicate medical marijuana purchases have totaled $259.1 million during the past year.
That’s about $65 a year on average that every Oklahoman (almost 4,000,000) spent on marijuana.
Do you think that is just for “medical” purposes?
Oklahoma is violating federal laws against marijuana with impunity. While it looks like the whole nation will someday (maybe soon) legalize recreational marijuana, Oklahoma is full steam ahead with decriminalization.
Our culture will pay a price for this mistake.
Marijuana usage is more harmful to health than beneficial. While Oklahoma spends hundreds of millions of dollars to stop cigarette smoking and vaping, the state is pushing the use of marijuana.
This is going to get worse.
