Thanks to Oklahoma, the Big 12 Conference made a splash during the recent NFL Draft.
Oklahoma quarterback and 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray was the top overall selection by the Arizona Cardinals.
With the pick, OU became the first school to have QBs go as the top draft choice in consecutive seasons after 2017 Heisman Trophy recipient Baker Mayfield went first last year to the Cleveland Browns. Additionally, the Sooners became the first program that has produced first-round signal callers in consecutive years, much less No. 1 overall picks. Oklahoma is only the second school (USC in 1968, 69) to have a top pick in back-to-back drafts, regardless of position.
The 2019 draft marks the third-consecutive in which the Big 12 has had a first round quarterback with Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes chosen at No. 10 in 2017 by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Two other Big 12 players were taken in the first round. OU wide receiver Marquise Brown, one of Murray’s top targets in 2018, was selected at No. 25 by the Baltimore Ravens. TCU defensive end L.J. Collier was picked at No. 29 by the Seattle Seahawks.
Brown earned AP All-America First Team honors in 2019 after ranking 14th nationally with 94.1 receiving yards per game and registering 10 receiving touchdowns. His 1,318 receiving yards rank as fourth most in school single-season history and he tied for the national lead in receptions of 40-plus yards (11), 50-plus yards (seven) and 60-plus yards (four).
Colllier was an All-Big 12 First Team selection by the Conference head coaches and Pro Football Focus. PFF gave him the highest grade among edge rushers in the Big 12 in 2018. He placed second on TCU with his career-high 6.0 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss and tied for third on the team with four pass breakups, the most by a Horned Frogs defensive lineman.
The Big 12 has had 84 first-round selections since its inception in 1996-97. A Big 12 QB has been selected in the first round 10 times.
