Thank God for U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia.
That’s right – Thank God for a Democrat.
Manchin, the closest thing the Democrats have to a conservative or moderate, announced that he would not vote with the Democrats to unilaterally make Washington, D.C., the 51st state.
Manchin rightly points out that previous administrations – both Democrat and Republican – opposed Congress taking such action.
“They all came to the same conclusion. If Congress wants to make D.C. a state, it should propose a constitutional amendment,” Manchin said. “It should propose a constitutional amendment and let the people of America vote.”
And this is really significant because the Senate now how 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans. The balance of power tilts ever so slightly to the Democrats because Vice President Kamala Harris is technically the president of the Senate and therefor the tiebreaker.
However, Manchin departure from the Democrats on this issue makes it certain that it can’t pass the Senate and it is now a dead issue.
The Democrats have a sinister intent. They want to make Washington, D.C., a state because it is heavily Democrat (80% perhaps) and it would perennially add two more Democrat senators to their caucus and future majorities.
The House approved the proposal completely along party lines.
Manchin may not be the only defector because this is such a bad idea.
Again, thank God that at least one Democrat has convictions and is willing to say so.
