Tulsa and Orlando tangled in a back-and-forth game, with the Pirates coming out on top in overtime, 61-55, on Sunday afternoon at the Kia Center in Orlando.

The Oilers dropped to 1-1 on the season and Orlando improved to 2-0.

Orlando scored on their first drive of the game, quarterback Paxton DeLaurent completed a touchdown pass to Thomas Owens from 14-yards out and the Pirates took a 7-0 lead with 11:55 left in the first quarter.

Tulsa responded on their first drive with a 23-yard touchdown pass from TJ Edwards II to Spencer Tears, and the score was tied with 9:16 left in the quarter.

Orlando took a ten-point lead with a 12-yard touchdown pass followed by a 28-yard field goal by Axel Perez, and the Pirates led 17-7 with 9:35 left in the second quarter.

Tulsa’s Jerminic Smith Sr. hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Edwards to bring the Oilers within three points, 17-14 with 7:15 left in the second quarter.

The Pirates extended their lead to 24-14, when Nyqwan Murray carried the ball eight yards for a score.

Tulsa quickly cut the lead again when Edwards connected with Tears on a 12-yard touchdown pass.

Orlando scored again as DeLaurent found Thomas Owens with a 22 yard touchdown pass into the end zone.

The Oilers would then turn two quick drives into a lead before halftime.

Tears caught a nine-yard touchdown pass along the boards, and before the half ended, Tulsa gained possession again, and Smith stumbled underneath a lob pass for a 5-yard score to give the Oilers a 35-30 lead. Not to be outdone, Orlando hit a field goal in the final second of the quarter to cut Tulsa’s lead, 35-33, going into halftime.

The Oilers extended their lead early in the third quarter when Edwards connected with Smith on a 40-yard catch and run touchdown, putting Tulsa ahead 42-33.

Orlando scored again to move within two points of Tulsa.

Then, Smith snagged a four-yard catch along the goal line for his franchise-high tying fourth receiving touchdown in one game with 11:33 to go in the fourth to put Tulsa ahead 49-40.

Again, the Pirates answered to make it 49-48. With 3:16 remaining regulation, Tulsa’s Bailey Hale hit a 25-yard field goal to put the Oilers ahead 52-48.

Orlando took the lead, as DeLaurent carried the ball on a quarterback-keeper from seven yards out.

With no time remaining on the clock, Tulas’s Hale nailed a 49-yard field goal to tie the game at 55-55 and force overtime.

Tulsa would start the extra frame with the ball but come up short of points and Orlando finished the game with a touchdown to defeat Tulsa 61-55.

Edwards tied a Tulsa franchise record with seven touchdown passes in the game.

Tulsa will play its home opener this weekend when the Oilers host the Fishers Freight. Saturday at the BOK Center. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. CDT.
