Massachusetts’ quarterback Kenji Bahar completed 14-of-18 passes for 156 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Pirates to a 58-37 win over the Tulsa Oilers, Saturday night at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass.

With the win, the Pirates moved to 6-5 on the season and have now won four straight games. Tulsa drops to 7-5 with the loss, and holds fourth place in the IFL Eastern Conference.

Beyond the loss of the game, Tulsa also lost the services of the team’s quarterback, TJ Edwards, who suffered a serious leg injury and left the game on a stretcher with 1:17 to play in the game. Both teams joined the Oilers quarterback as he was taken from the field.

Tulsa opened the scoring as Edwards connected with Cole Blackman on a seven-yard touchdown pass for the only points of the first quarter.

The Pirates found the end zone with 12:48 left in the second quarter as they scored on a three-yard run by Pooka Williams Jr. The point after was no good, leaving the Pirates down by one.

After stopping the Oilers on their next drive, Massachusetts put together a nine-play, 41-yard drive that ended with Bahar scoring on a one-yard shove, giving Massachusetts a 13-7 lead. The Pirates would go on to score on five straight drives.

Tulsa regained the lead on their next possession when Edwards to Blackman combined again on a two-yard touchdown pass, putting the Oilers ahead, 14-13. With five seconds left in the half, Bahar connected with Teo Redding for his first touchdown reception of the game. Thomas Owens followed with a two-point conversion reception and the Pirates led 21-14 at halftime.

Massachusetts would remain in the lead throughout the second half. The Pirates scored on their next two possessions and mounted a 34-14 advantage with 5:11 left in the third quarter.

Tulsa kept within striking distance as Edwards scored his only rushing touchdown of the game on a nine-yard run to cap a four-play 31-yard drive. The quarter ended with Tulsa trailing 34-21.

Edwards did all he could to keep Tulsa in the game in the fourth quarter, including an eight-yard touchdown pass to Phazione McClurge, he then caught a two-point conversion pass from Hasan Rogers, and he completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Blackman. McClurge added a two-point conversion catch, but the Pirates led 51-37, with 4:01 remaining.

The Oilers tried an onside kick, but the Pirates’ Thomas Owens returned the ball 12 yards for a touchdown and the game’s final points.

The Oilers will be home to face the Fishers Freight on Saturday, at 7:05 p.m. at the BOK Center.
