Tulsa Schools may switch

The Oklahoma City School Board pushed the start of school back to August 31 and announced that the first nine weeks of classes will be strictly “virtual learning” instead of face-to-face instruction.

Tulsa Public Schools has pushed the start of classes back to August 31 instead of August 10 but has not made an announcement concerning a move like Oklahoma City.

The actions are in response to the surge of positive tests in Oklahoma of the coronavirus.

Oklahoma City said that teachers and administrators will use the delayed start for additional training on how to teach electronically instead of in person.

“Decisions we make have everything to do with the safety and welfare of employees, kids, of families, of visitors. We have kept that in the forefront,” said Superintendent Sean McDaniel.

Tulsa Public Schools is thinking about a combination method, with some classes in-persona and some online. A decision is expected in August and it will be based partially on the extent of the pandemic.

As of now, Tulsa Public Schools will open August 31 and end on June 8, 2021. It includes “distance learning” every Wednesday, with some students getting tutoring as needed.

Tulsa needs to add 36 minutes to each day of school and that will impact start and end times for classes. And TPS is relaxing its requirements for students to wear uniforms. Because of the economic impact of the pandemic, families can forego purchase of uniforms. Students will still be allowed to wear uniforms at school.

According to its website, Union Public Schools will open for classes on August 24 and the last day for classes will be May 28, 2021.

The first day of school for Broken Arrow will be August 19 and the tentative last day of school is May 26, 2021.

Jenks Public Schools will start classes on also on August 19, with June 2 as the last day for the school year.

Owasso Schools will hold their first day of class on August 13. May 19 is the last day of school. Masks will be mandatory.

 Bixby Schools also plan to start on August 13 and end classes on May 19.

August 13 is the first day of school for Glenpool Schools and May 26 is the last day of school.

August 15 is the first day of school for Skiatook Schools and May 22 is the last day.

Sperry Schools are giving families three options for their students: 1. On-site instruction; 2. A combination of on-site and virtual; and, 3. Distance learning. Parents or guardians have to call in July to enroll in options 2 or 3. Sperry classes begin August 15 and the school year ends on May 8.

Classes at Catoosa Schools begin on August 19 and the school year ends on May 20.

Berryhill classes begin August 13 and end May 20. Sand Springs Schools begin August 18 and end May 20.

 August 13 will be the first day of school for Liberty Public Schools and May 20 will be the last.

August 13 is the first day of school for Mingo Valley Christian School.

Regent Preparatory School will open for classes on August 24.

Augustine Christian Academy starts classes on August 28.

Metro Christian Academy starts August 12.

Rejoice Christian School in Owasso will open classes on August 20.

Summit Christian Academy in Broken Arrow does not have information on the school calendar on its website.

Classes begin at Bishop Kelley High School on August 11.
