Rep. Jason Lowe, Oklahoma City, has filed a petition to repeal the Constitutional Carry law that goes into effect on November 1.

Surrounded by representatives of Young Democrats of America and Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action, Lowe will have 10 days (until August 29) to get the required signatures to force a statewide vote to repeal House Bill 2597 on a ballot in 2020.

“Our Republican-led legislature voted overwhelmingly in 2019 to protect Oklahomans’ constitutional right to carry and through Governor Kevin Stitt’s leadership, Oklahomans will soon be allowed to fully exercise their Second Amendment right to bear arms,” said Oklahoma Republican Party Chairman David McLain.

“The Oklahoma Republican Party stands ready to defend every Oklahoman’s right to bear arms and we stand firmly against the far-left agenda of Oklahoma Democrat lawmakers and out-of-state socialists.”

Repeal advocates have 90 days from the end of the legislative session (May 31) to get 5 percent of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial election. That would be 59,320 signatures.

It is unlikely the repeal effort will meet the deadline. It may take weeks for the Secretary of State’s Office just to approve the petition for circulation.

On November 1, Oklahomans will be able to legally carry a firearm openly without a permit.

This was the first bill signed by Governor Kevin Stitt. Ex-Gov. Mary Fallin had vetoed a similar bill the year before.
