Oral Roberts University introduced its new women’s basketball head coach at a press conference last week. Kelsi Musick becomes the 11th head coach in the program’s history.

Musick replaces Misti Cussen who was let go recently after 10 years as head coach and 26 years on the women’s basketball coaching staff.

Musick, a native of Canton, Okla., comes to ORU after 13 seasons as head coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where she led the Lady Bulldogs to the NCAA Division II National Championship game in 2019.

“Coach Musick has shown consistently why she is one of the best coaches in the game with her leadership on and off the court,” said Tim Johnson, ORU Director of Athletics. “Her records, player development, success in recruiting and trip to the National Championship in 2019 have proven why she is one of the top coaches in the country. I have no doubt and am confident ORU women’s basketball will reach the peak of the Summit League with Coach Musick, as we are focused on elevating the program to compete for championships while building a championship culture and developing young women in mind, body and spirit.”

Musick led the Lady Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament seven times that includes one regional championship and four GAC Tournament Championships. Her teams averaged 18.3 wins per season with eight 20-win seasons.

During her time at SWOSU, Musick became one of the nation’s top coaches in Division II history. She has managed a 259-125 (.674) overall record and a 182-74 (.710) record in conference play with two seasons in the Lone Star Conference and the other nine in the Great American Conference.

TULSA PARKS GOLF

Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum, Tulsa Parks officials, members of the PGA of America, and members of the Citizens Golf Advisory Committee held a joint press conference last Monday to announce the city’s renewed commitment to the future of municipal golf in Tulsa. Also, it was announced a large donation will be giving to the city to jump start a fund-raising drive.

PGA Reach, the charitable foundation of the PGA of America, is donating $250,000 to the City of Tulsa parks department for improvements at the cities two golf courses; Page Belcher and Mohawk. There is a catch.

In February, the Tulsa City Council voted to use $1-million of the American Rescue funding for its golf courses, if the city can raise $1-million in matching donations from private sources. The donation from PGA Reach is the first major stake toward that $1-million match.

The PGA Championship will be held at Southern Hills Country Club, May 16-22, and the PGA of America has a new initiative to leave a mark in each city where it holds its championship events each year.

If any individual or business would like to donate toward the matching fund drive, they can do so at the Tulsa Community Foundation website; www.tulsacf.org.
