Oral Roberts defeated Dallas Baptist, 6-5, Sunday evening to claim the Stillwater Regional in the NCAA College Baseball Tournament. It is only the second time, and the first since 2006, that the Golden Eagles are headed to an NCAA Super Regional. ORU had lost the last seven matchups against DBU coming into this game.

With the win, the Golden Eagles became the eighth No. 4 seed in NCAA history to advance to a Super Regional. ORU went 3-0 in the Stillwater Regional, defeating Oklahoma State, Washington, and Dallas Baptist. This is the third time the Golden Eagles have gone undefeated in an NCAA Regional (1978 & 2006).

ORU has now won 21 consecutive games, the nation’s longest active streak, and is 49-11 overall.

Relief pitcher Dalton Patten earned the win and improved to 4-1 on the season after striking out four in 2.1 innings of work. Closer Cade Denton, the Stillwater Regional Most Outstanding Player, slammed the door shut in the ninth to register his third save in three days. The save marked the 15th of the year for the junior, which ties the program’s single-season record.

Matt Hogan led the Golden Eagles offense with a home run and two RBI and Jonah Cox extended his hit streak to 44 games in the win and has registered a hit in 59 of the 60 games this season.

The Golden Eagles struck first with a two-out two-run single by Holden Breeze in the first inning.

After DBU got a run back courtesy of a solo homer in the top half of the second, ORU answered with two more runs to extend its advantage to 4-1. An RBI groundout from Justin Quinn plated the first run of the inning and Cox followed with an RBI single.

The two teams went scoreless over the next three innings before the Patriots used back-to-back homers to even the score at 4-4 in the sixth. Hogan delivered the answer for ORU in the bottom half of the frame as the senior put the Golden Eagles back in front, 6-4, with a two-out two-run homer.

Dallas Baptist threatened again in the seventh as they trimmed the ORU advantage to one, 6-5, on a one-out RBI single. With the go-ahead run on second, Patten forced a fly out and a pop-up to escape the jam.

Denton closed the door in the ninth with a scoreless frame as the Golden Eagles claimed the 6-5 victory.

The ORU pitching staff struck out 14 DBU batters in the game, including seven strikeouts over five innings by starter Brooks Fowler.

The Golden Eagles will now face Oregon in an NCAA Super Regional, with the date and time still to be announced.
