Less than a month ago, it wasn’t clear whether the Oral Roberts University baseball team would even make the Summit League Baseball Tournament. However, the Golden Eagles won 10 out of their last 14 regular season games to become the No. 3 seed entering the conference tournament.

ORU hosted the Summit League baseball tournament last weekend and the Golden Eagles swept through the tournament with ease, claiming their 22nd Summit League title.

In their opening game on Wednesday, ORU defeated North Dakota State 11-3.

Jakob Hall picked up the win on the mound for ORU, pitching 6.1 innings, giving up only three runs, while striking out eight batters and allowing only one walk.

Offensively, Elijah Rodriguez, Holden Breeze and Sam Thompson each homered for the Golden Eagles.

On Thursday, ORU faced Northern Colorado, a team the Golden Eagles had not lost to this season. ORU shutout the Bears 14-0 to advance to the championship game.

Three ORU pitchers combined for the shutout, allowing only two hits in the game; Brooks Fowler, Connor Floyd and Dalton Patton.

ORU scored 12 runs in the eighth inning, including a three-run homer by David Herring and a solo homer by Kole Dudding.

After beating North Dakota State in the losers’ bracket semifinal, the Bears found themselves facing ORU once again in the championship game on Saturday.

Again, the Golden Eagles dominated in this contest to win 11-4.

ORU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a pair of two-run homers by Rodriguez and Drew Stahl.

The Bears quickly answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

ORU sealed the win in the sixth inning when Stahl hit a grand slam to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 10-3.

At this point of the tournament, UNC’s pitching staff was worn out and the Bears sent eight different pitchers to the mound, to work against the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles advance to the NCAA Regional.  they will be playing in the Norman Regional, with their first game on Friday, May 31 at 6 p.m. against the OU Sooners in L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.
