In its first game without Mike Gundy as head coach in more than 20 years, Oklahoma State looked only slightly better than the team did in its last game with Gundy at the helm. Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson passed for 393 yards and four touchdowns, and the Bears defeated the Cowboys, 45-27, on Saturday in Stillwater.
The Bears record improved to XXX. Oklahoma State is now 1-3, 0-1 Big 12.
“Happy for the win, it’s the first time that I’ve won here,” said Baylor head coach Dave Aranda. “It’s a very difficult place to play, you know. The crowd is right on you, and the crowd has energy. It’s a loud spot, even with the circumstances of today; it was loud. (There were) negatives, for sure, but the positives are the finish, care factor and the guys fighting through. We’ve got a bunch of young guys that are playing.”
OSU interim head coach Doug Meacham was happy with his team’s performance.
“Beyond the schematics and things that went right or wrong, it’s very impressive to me to watch these guys, under all the adversity, come out with all the energy,” said OSU interim head coach Doug Meacham. “To me, they were the most excited team to play that game and had no reason to be. It’s a testament to Mike (Gundy), building the culture here, picking the right kind of guys that will fight through adversity and come together as a team. I had a lot of fun, and I know they had a lot of fun. (I’m) Proud of the guys and proud of the staff for preparing these guys.”
Baylor opened the scoring with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Robertson to Kole Wilson early in the first quarter.
OSU tied the game with an option play that resulted with a 26-yard pass from wideout Sam Jackson V to Josh Ford for a touchdown, with 6:54 remaining in the first quarter.
The Bears regained the lead when Bryson Washington carried the ball into the end zone from 19 yards out.
OSU’s Logan Ward kicked a 39-yard field goal to bring the Cowboys within four points, 14-10, with 11:31 left in the second quarter.
Baylor extended its lead to 21-10 as Robertson connected with Matthew Klopfenstein on a six-yard touchdown pass.
OSU answered again, this time with a 10-yard touchdown run by Trent Howland with 8:12 left before halftime, and Baylor led 21-17.
Baylor and Robertson struck again, as the Bears quarterback found an open Michael Trigg with a 10-yard scoring pass, to put the Bears ahead 28-17.
However, before the quarter was over, the Cowboys’ Ward kicked a 42-yard field goal to keep OSU in the game, and at halftime the score was Baylor 28 – OSU 20.
Baylor received the kickoff and opened the second half with a quick three play drive, covering 86 yards, and culminating with a 73-yard scoring strike from Robertson to Kobe Prentice. Baylor took a 35-20 lead.
Again, OSU battled back with a five-play drive that ended with Trent Howland carrying the ball one-yard into the end zone.
Baylor tagged on a field goal and a quarterback keeper by Robertson, in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Robertson threw each of his four touchdown passes to a different player. Josh Cameron caught six passes for 98 yards for the Bears. Baylor gained a total of 612 yards on offense.
Zane Flores completed 23-of-41 passes for 232 yards for Oklahoma State. Howland had career highs of 84 yards and two touchdowns rushing for the Cowboys. OSU had a season-high 448 yards of offense.
“Overall, the offense played really well, especially in the first half,” Flores said. “We moved the ball down the field, throwing it, running it. We stalled a little bit there in the second half, but I think the offense played solid today.”
OSU will travel to Tucson to play the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CDT on TNT/truTV.
