No. 5 ranked Oregon romped Oklahoma State, 48-3, Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore. It was the worst defeat for the Cowboys in over 100 years.

The 66-point loss was the largest for OSU since 1907, and the most points given up by the Cowboys since Texas beat OSU, 71-14, in 1996.

“We have to be better and fundamentally sound and execute,” OSU head coach Mike Gundy said after the game. “That’s really what it comes down to. And then, as I said, sometimes you’re gonna play people that have the ability to run away from you. Well then, we’ve got to look at that and see where we’re at.”

The Ducks (2-0) scored on the first possession of the game, on the second play from scrimmage, as Noah Whittington carried the ball 59 yards to the end zone.

After OSU (1-1) went three-and-out, Oregon scored again, but this time it was on first down when quarterback Dante Moore connected wide receiver Dakorien Moore on a 69 yard touchdown pass.

Before the end of the first quarter, Oregon struck again with a Dierre Hill Jr. 19-yard touchdown run.

The Cowboys opened the second quarter with a drive that culminated with a 23-yard field goal by Logan Ward.

Oregon would go on to score three more touchdowns in the second quarter and lead OSU, 41-3 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Ducks scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass to Gary Bryant, and a one-yard run by Jordan Davison, and their lead was extended to 55-3.

Then late in the third quarter, OSU quarterback Zane Flores threw back-to-back pick sixes. The Ducks’ Jerry Mixon returned one interception 26 yards for a touchdown, and Peyton Woodyard returned another from 30-yards out. Oregon led 69-3 at the end of the third quarter.

OSU backup quarterback Banks Bowen was seen warming up on the sideline and it appeared he would replace Flores in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t to be. Flores finished the game and thankfully, the fourth quarter was uneventful. Neither team scored in the final quarter of the game.

“There’s no reason to deny they’re a good team,” Gundy said about Oregon. “There’s nothing wrong with saying that teams you’re playing are good teams. They have a lot of skill, and they have a lot of speed, and they’re very big upfront on both sides of the ball.”

Flores, starting for the first time in his career, completed seven of 190 passes for 67 yards. The Cowboys’ Kalib Hicks carried the ball 14 times for 63 yards and Trent Howland had six carries for 31 yards.

The Ducks gained a whopping 631 yards on offense while holding OSU to only 211 total yards. Dante Moore completed 16-of-21 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Whittington finished with four carries for 91 yards and one touchdown. Oregon had eight different players score touchdowns in the game.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning was happy with his quarterback’s performance.

“He’s maturing really quick,” Lanning said. “We want to be a team that can beat you by air and by land.”

OSU is off this week and will host Tulsa at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19 in Boone Pickens Stadium.
