A failed two-point conversion, a missed extra point and a fourth quarter fumble were costly mistakes as the Oklahoma State Cowboys came oh so close to upsetting No. 6 Oklahoma in the Bedlam game Saturday in Norman.
OSU has another chance to knock off a Top 10 team as the Cowboy hosts No. 7 West Virginia (8-1 overall; 6-1 in the Big 12) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be on ABC TV.
Only twice before have the Cowboys played back-to-back games against top-seven opponents: 2004 against No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 6 Texas, and 1986 vs. No. 3 Nebraska and No. 5 Oklahoma.
With a minute left against OU, OSU scored a touchdown and pulled to within one point at 47-48. Cowboy coach Mike Gundy opted to go for two and a pass in the endzone was knocked away by an OU defender.
“I just tried to place the ball instead of throwing it,” OSU quarterback Taylor Cornelius said of the two-point attempt. “He was open, I just should’ve hit him where he could catch the ball.
“We had decided before the drive even started that we were going to go for two. We knew that going in, and we scored, so we knew what we were going to do. We were confident in that play and worked on it the past couple weeks. I just failed to execute.”
Minutes before, the Cowboys were driving for a go-ahead score when they lost a fumble – their only turnover in the game.
“That was a heck of a college football game,” Gundy said after the game. “We could probably talk about a lot. We made a couple mistakes in the game and they didn’t, but I’m very proud of our guys to come down and compete and play hard. They bought in, practiced hard and showed a good culture.
“You sure would’ve liked to complete that last pass, but sometimes things don’t go your way. I told the team that I couldn’t be any more proud of them. They came to the fight and stood tall. As a coach, that’s all you can ask, for guys to buy in, practice hard and when it comes time to play, to play. I’m very excited about them standing toe-to-toe. We made a lot of plays and it was a fun game.”
OSU star running back Justice Hill was injured early in the game.
“It factored in some,” Gundy said. “I thought they did a great job of rallying to overcome that, though.”
OSU kicker Matt Ammendola missed a field goal attempt and a crucial extra point when the teams were neck and neck.
“He’s not been kicking good of late, that’s for sure, so we’ll have to address that issue tomorrow and come up with the best solution,” Gundy said. “He missed a couple against Texas that were pretty moderate kicks for this level, and Baylor was a different deal, but here, he should’ve made those kicks. So we’ll have to address that issue.”
The late fumble by OSU running back Chuba Hubbard was a key shift in momentum.
“I got twisted up kind of weird,” Hubbard said. “I should have had two hands on the ball obviously and it just got away from me.”
The rivalry continues to be lopsided. OU is 88-18-7 against OSU and the Sooners have won the last four in a row.
The OSU offense had 640 yards of total offense but the Sooners had 702.
The Cowboys need one more win to gain bowl eligibility with only two games left – against West Virginia and at TCU.
“We were on the edge of our seat,” said freshman receiver Brandon Johnson. “It was a fun game. … It always hurts when you lose close. When you lose by a point, it always hurts more because you know you could’ve done something better to help the team win.
“Like Coach Gundy said, after a loss, tomorrow, we’ve got to practice. We’ve got to watch film on West Virginia. They’re next. We can’t dwell on this forever when we’ve got another game next week. We’ve got to get to work.”
Saturday’s game is the 10th meeting between OSU and West Virginia and the seventh consecutive season the teams have faced each other. OSU leads the series, 5-4, while the series in Stillwater is split at an even 2-2. The Cowboys have won three in a row over the Mountaineers, marking the longest streak for either side in the series.
OSU won last year’s meeting at WVU, 50-39, and won the last meeting in Stillwater, 37-20, in 2016. Gundy is 4-2 in his coaching career against WVU, while Dana Holgorsen in 2-4 in his career against OSU.
