It was a very tight game throughout, but ultimately the Oklahoma Sooners prevailed in overtime, defeating Texas, 88-85, Saturday in Austin. It was the Sooners fourth straight win and sixth in the last eight games.

The Sooners’ record improved to 17-14 overall, 7-11 SEC. Texas is now 18-13, 9-9 SEC. Oklahoma improved to 59-50 all-time against Texas.

The two teams battled back-and-forth through the first half, although the Sooners led for 13 minutes of the half, but the Longhorns had a 40-36 lead at halftime.

OU took the lead early in the second half and held a 12-point lead with 6:58 remaining in the second half, 69-57, but watched that disappear as Texas outscored the Sooners 20-8 down the stretch. Regulation time ended with the scored tied 77-77.

“We got gut punched at the end of the game,” said OU head coach Porter Moser. “We fouled two three-point shooters, I thought we got bumped (fouled) but they called an out of bounds play. Late in a game on the road, you’re not going to get that bump (call). But to be able to handle that gut punch and bounce back in overtime, was apropos for us.”

The Sooners scored first in overtime but were down by one point when Mohamed Wague tipped in a missed 3-point attempt by Nijel Pack for an 83-82 lead with 1:04 left. After a defensive stop, Xavier Brown found Derrion Reid in the corner for a key 3-pointer and four-point lead with 11 seconds on the clock. OU forced another miss on the Longhorns’ next possession and Pack buried two free throws at the other end to seal the game.

Pack led the Sooners with 23 points, including 3-for-7 from 3-point distance, while Brown finished with 21 and 2-for-4 from behind the arc. Tae Davis added 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds for OU and Derrion Reid scored 11 with the help of 6-for-6 free throw shooting.

Jordan Pope led the Longhorns with 30 points, going 8-for-25 from the field, 7-for-18 from behind the arc and 7-for-7 at the foul line.

OU outrebounded Texas, 40-35.

“We’re playing out best basketball of the year, and that’s what you want this time of the year,” Moser said.

Next up for Oklahoma is the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. The No. 11-seeded Sooners will play a first-round game on Wednesday against No. 14 seed South Carolina (13-18, 4-14).
