Kentucky swept the Oklahoma Sooners in a three-game series at home, by winning 7-2 in the finale on Sunday afternoon.
It was the second time this season that the Sooners (32-17, 13-14 SEC) were swept in a series. The Wildcats (28-20, 13-14) came away with three wins to improve their hopes of making the NCAA tournament.
In the bottom of first inning an RBI double off the bat of James McCoy gave the Wildcats an early lead. Carson Hansen hit a triple in the second inning, and then he scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
OU battled back in the fourth inning. Scott Mudler and Kyle Branch each knocked in a run to tie the game, but that would be all for the Sooners.
Kentucky responded with a two-run home run from shortstop Tyler Bell followed by a solo homer from Luke Lawrence, giving the Wildcats the lead for good.
Witherspoon (3-7) took the loss for the Sooners and exited the game after four innings, surrendering five runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Oklahoma dropped the second game of the series Saturday by a final of 8-5.
OU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kentucky responded with four runs on two hits in the home half of the first.
The Wildcats then added one run in the second on an RBI groundout from Cole Hage.
Oklahoma got a leadoff solo home run from Scott Mudler in the top of the fifth inning. It was Mudler’s second of the season and first since February 22.
UK got the run back and more in the home half of the fifth on a three-run double from Schwartz, running his RBI total to four on the day.
Mudler picked up a couple more RBI in the sixth inning, knocking in a pair of runs on a bases-loaded double to right.
OU starter Cade Crossland (4-4) pitched three innings and surrendered five runs on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
In the series opener on Friday night, Kentucky got past OU with a 4-3 win.
OU struck first in the third inning, after Trey Gambill reached base with a single to right, Easton Carmichael hit a two-run home run, his 13th HR of the season.
The Wildcats responded with four runs in the bottom of the third, including a two-run homer by Cole Hage, putting Kentucky ahead, 4-2.
In the top of the fifth, OU trimmed the lead to one on a two-out RBI single from Kyle Branch to make it 4-3.
OU pitcher Kyson Witherspoon took the loss (9-3), pitching five innings, surrendering four runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Sooners wrap up the regular season at home this weekend with a Thursday through Saturday series against the Texas Longhorns. Game times on Thursday and Friday are 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
