The Oklahoma Sooners will face the Navy Midshipmen on December 27 at 11 a.m. in Amon G. Carter Stadium at TCU in Fort Worth in the Armed Forces Bowl on ESPN.
The last and only time the Sooners played Navy was in 1965 in Norman and OU lost 10-0.
This will be the 26th straight bowl game that the Sooners have played in since 1999, which is the first year Coach Bob Stoops was at OU. This is the second longest bowl streak actively held, with Georgia being the longest with 28 straight bowl games.
The Sooners will be without their current QB Jackson Arnold. He entered the transfer portal and will not play. The most likely QB will be Michael Hawkins, Jr. who led the Sooners to their win over Auburn this season, their first SEC conference win. He later faltered against Texas and South Carolina and was replaced by Arnold.
“Our team is excited to play in OU’s first-ever Armed Forces Bowl, and the fact that it’s in Fort Worth is a bonus for so many of our fans,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said in a statement Sunday evening. “Coach (Brian) Newberry has coached Navy to a phenomenal season so far, guiding them to a top-25 ranking for the first time in five years. They will present a strong challenge for us, especially in terms of defending their rushing attack, which ranks in the top-10 nationally at 250 yards a game. We’re looking forward to diving into film study and getting back to the practice field this week. Bowl season is always an exciting time of year.”
Navy went 8-3, 6-2 ACC have one more game to play against Army this weekend.
Navy runs a version of the triple option. Although in the past OU ran the triple option, these defensive players have not yet faced such a challenge.
They are coached by second year Coach Brian Newberry. Newberry was raised in Oklahoma City and Moore and played baseball, football and ran track for Westmoore.
