No. 21 Oklahoma took two out of three games against No. 23 Ole Miss over the weekend at L. Dale Mitchell Park, in Norman.
The Sooners shut out the Running Rebels, 2-0, in the first game of the series Friday night. OU right-handed ace Kyson Witherspoon pitched another great game to earn the victory, (9-2). Witherspoon pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only one hit with eight strikeouts and three walks. Relievers Jason Bodin and Dylan Crooks finished OU’s third shutout of the season with Crooks collecting his 11th save of the year.
Oklahoma scored in the home half of the fifth with two runs on two hits. After a pair of walks to start the inning, a bunt single from Drew Dickerson loaded the bases with no outs. Dawson Willis hit into a fielder’s choice to score one run before an RBI single from Trey Gambill pushed OU’s second run across.
On Saturday, OU beat Ole Miss 5-3, and the Sooners’ starting pitcher Cade Crossland turned in a quality start, tying his season high with eight strikeouts. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs, and scattering five hits with just one walk.
The Sooners struck early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, led by Gambill’s triple and an Easton Carmichael homer.
Carmichael hit two home runs in the game for his second multi-homer game of the season. The Sooner catcher went 4-for-5 on the day with three RBI.
The series wrapped up on Sunday, and Ole Miss turned the table on OU, beating the Sooners, 7-3.
The Running Rebels opened up a 6-1 lead through the first five innings, and the Sooners could never recover. The Sooners depleted their pitching staff, sending seven pitchers to the mound in the loss.
OU’s record is now 32-14 overall, 13-10 in the SEC. The series victory was OU’s fifth in eight SEC series on the year and second ranked series win. The Rebels are now 33-15, 12-11 SEC.
OU will open a three-game series at Kentucky on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Central.
