During the month of September, the Tulsa Police Department will focus on posted speed violations and hazardous moving violations in active school zones (lights flashing) throughout the City of Tulsa.

Tulsa Police traffic officers and motorcycle officers will be randomly monitoring active school zones within the City of Tulsa during this action.  A citation issued for speeding in a school zone requires a court appearance with a fine of $500+ and/or up to 30 days in jail. No warnings will be issued.

Schools in the area have recently returned to their sessions after returning from summer break, children will be playing in and around schools, crossing streets, walking to and from the areas around schools and are more likely to be distracted and not paying full attention to vehicles in these areas.

Due to the increased foot traffic in the area of local schools; drivers are reminded to remain alert, refrain from using all electronic communication devices, always employ occupant protection devices (seatbelts/child restraints) and heed all warning signs when approaching active school zones, police said.  It is the goal of the Traffic Unit to increase the safety of school children going to and from their schools and to prevent collisions occurring in school zones, especially those involving vehicles and pedestrians.

The Tulsa Police Department reminds drivers to remain alert, refrain from using all electronic communication devices, buckle their seatbelts, secure children in a properly installed child restraint system and to pay special attention to all school zones.  It is the goal of the Tulsa Police Department to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions within the City of Tulsa.
