The April 1st Special Election primaries for House Districts 71 and 74 resulted in two Republican runoff elections and one Democrat primary decided.
Amanda Swope resigned from House District 71 and the Republican primary for that district sported three Republican candidates. Attorney Beverly A. Atteberry garnered almost enough votes to win out with 48.56 percent of the vote (219 votes). Tania Garza came in second and will be in the runoff with Atteberry on May 13. She received 132 votes for 29.27 percent. Heidemarie Fuentes received 100 votes for 22.17 percent. Only 451 votes were cast.
On the Democrat side of District 71 there were four candidates running. Amanda Clinton won the primary election with 1,146 votes which was 51.25 percent of the votes cast. She will face the winner of the Republican runoff in the June 10th general election.
Of the remaining Democrat candidates Denis Baker received 587 votes (26.25 percent), Ben Riggs earned 363 votes (16.23 percent) and Hudson Harder got 140 votes (6.26 percent). A total of 2,236 votes were cast.
Mark Vancuren resigned from House District 74, leaving the seat open for a special election.
The Republican primary saw five filings for candidates. Sheila Vancuren (Mark’s wife) won the most votes with 412 making 27.20 percent of the 1,498 votes cast. Pastor Kevin Wayne Norwood earned 297 votes or 19.83 percent and will be in the Republican runoff with Vancuren.
The remaining challengers were Maggie Stearman with 282 votes (18.83 percent), Brad Peixotto earned 271 votes (18.09 percent) and Johnathon Shepherd received 236 votes (15.75 percent).
The winner of the Republican runoff for District 74 will face the lone Democrat who filed, Amy Hossain.
Two municipal elections were decided in the April 1st election as well.
Christopher Anthony Brobst the incumbent won the Ward 2 election in Glenpool with 251 votes or 63.71 percent. While challenger Kim Hanson-Mercier earned 137 votes or 36.29 percent of the vote.
Jenks Ward 3 was a close and contentious election with incumbent Cory Box winning with 54.81 percent of the vote (1,278 votes) over challenger Catherin Lenhart who came up with 45.19 percent (1,038 votes).
There were two runoffs for School Board elections decided as well in the April 1st election.
In Tulsa Public Schools District 3 Kyra Carby beat Dorie Simmons 349 votes to 165 (67.90 percent to 32.10).
The Tulsa Tech Board runoff featured incumbent Rick Kibbe versus Todd Blackburn. Kibbe won with 166 votes (52.87 percent) while challenger Blackburn earned 148 votes (47.13 percent).
The Republican runoff election for the special House Districts 71 and 74 will be on May 13th with a voter registration deadline of April 18 and an absentee ballot deadline of April 28.
