Oscar Cluff scored 21 points and pulled down 20 rebounds to lead South Dakota State to an 84-70 win over Oral Roberts, at First Bank & Trust Arena, in Brookings, S.D., on Saturday.
With the loss, ORU is now 5-13 overall,1-4 in Summit League play. SDSU improved to 12-8, 3-2 SL.
The game was characterized by scoring runs by both teams. SDSU opened the game on a 9-0 run and led 11-4 at the 16:16 mark, but ORU responded with a 10-0 run of its own, to take a 14-11 lead. The Jackrabbits then countered with an 11-2 run, and at halftime, SDSU led 41-35.
The Jackrabbits opened the second half on a 9-3 run and eventually grew their lead to 15 points. ORU battled back to within eight points with 1:59 remaining in the game but couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Oral Roberts was led by Issac McBride with 26 points, including 4-of-8 three-pointers, JoJo Moore and Jalen Miller each had 15 points, and Jackson Skipper added 13.
The Golden Eagles shot 37.7 percent (23-61) from the field, 31.0 percent (9-29) from three-point range, and 75.0 percent (15-20) from the free throw line. ORU forced 10 SDSU turnovers and had nine of its own. The Golden Eagles were outrebounded 44-32, but ORU recorded 14 second-chance points to the Jackrabbit’s eight.
SDSU shot 48.4 percent from the field, 32.0 percent from three-point range, and 84.2 percent from the free throw line.
The Golden Eagles have a pair of s at home this week, hosting Denver on Thursday, January 23 and Omaha on Saturday, January 25. Game times are 7:05 p.m.
