State Sen. Nathan Dahm wants Oklahoma law to conform to the 2nd Amendment rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution.
Dahn has introduced Senate Bill 12, which would amend state law to allow anyone 21 or older to carry a firearm, concealed or unconcealed, loaded or unloaded – with few exceptions. It doesn’t change the status of criminals who are disqualified from possessing firearms.
Now, the state issues handgun licenses for concealed carry. Dahm’s law would not let guns in places where they are already prohibited, like on college campuses or schools.
It also makes it illegal for aliens who are illegally or unlawfully in the United States to possess a firearm or have one in their vehicle. The new bill would let citizens transport firearms in their vehicles but they must inform a law enforcement officer of its presence during a traffic stop or arrest.
Senate Republican leaders usually allow only one firearm bill to advance during each session and Dahm is hopeful his will make it to a floor vote. The session began Monday.
