Seven Sooner athletes both former and present will be competing in the 2024 Olympics.
The current Sooner athletes are Emre Dodanli (Turkey) in men’s gymnastics and Ralford Mullings in Men’s Track and Field.
Dodanli will be a member of the first gymnastics team from Turkey that has qualified for the Olympics. The gymnastics began on Saturday and will finish this Saturday.
Mullings, a transfer from Arkansas has not yet competed for OU, but will represent Jamaica in the discus. The discus will start on August 5.
Men’s golfer Abraham (Abe) Ancer will be a second time Olympian (Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024) and will compete for Mexico. The golf competition begins on Thursday and finishes on Sunday.
The other second time Olympian is Ama Pipi representing Great Britain in Track & Field in the 500 meter and 4 x 400 meter relay. She was an All-American at OU and holds the OU record for indoor 400 meter sprint. The 400 meter will begin on August 5.
James Fraschilla, will be an assistant coach for USA Men’s 3×3 basketball. He was a walkon for OU basketball.
Abi Olajuwon will play in women’s basketball for Nigeria. They beat Australia, in the first round and will play France on August 1. She is the daughter of NBA great Hakeen Olajuwon.
Vernon Turner will compete for the United States in the high jump. Just finishing his time at OU in 2023 he holds the OU indoor and outdoor records in high jump. He graduated from Yukon high school. Qualification for high jump is slated for August 7.
OU has seen 88 Olympians from 12 countries come from its ranks and has had its athletes compete in the last 22 Olympic Games. They boast 23 medals with 13 gold, seven silver and three bronze. It’s most decorated medal winners are Bart Conner (gymnastics), Dave and Mark Schultz (wrestling) and Wayman Tisdale (basketball).
