Oklahoma moved another step closer to securing a spot in the College Football Playoff, by defeating Missouri, 17-6, Saturday at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman.

The Sooners (9-2, 5-2 SEC, No. 8 CFP) were coming off road wins at Tennessee and Alabama. This was the team’s their third straight victory over a ranked opponent. The Tigers fell to 7-4 overall, 3-4 SEC, and were No. 22 CFP before the loss.

Oklahoma was led by quarterback John Mateer who completed 14-of-30 passes for 173 yards with two touchdown passes. He also ran for 60 yards with 44 of those yards coming in the fourth quarter.

“Winning is the goal, and all that matters,” Mateer said. “Some people say we should win pretty. That’s (Missouri) a good defense, and that’s a good team. So, I’m proud of the guys, and I’m proud of the offense.”

The Sooners didn’t rack up pretty stats, in fact, they were held to only 276 yards of total offense, while the Tigers collected 301 total yards but didn’t score in the second half.

Isaiah Sategna caught three passes for 109 yards and a touchdown for OU.

Missouri quarterback Beau Pribula returned to action after missing three games due to injury. He went 20-for-36 passing for 231 yards and two interceptions.

“I thought he distributed the ball well,” Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz said. “I thought he made good decisions for the most part. You know, ultimately the two takeaways or two turnovers hurt at the end, but I was proud of the courage he showed to play.”

Tigers’ running back Ahmad Hardy finished with 57 yards on 17 carries, and Kevin Coleman Jr. caught seven passes for 115 yards.

The only points for Missouri came on field goals from 39 yards by Robert Meyer in the first quarter and a 21 yarder by Oliver Robbins in the second quarter. OU’s Peyton Bowen blocked a 35-yard field-goal attempt by Meyer in the second quarter.

With 6:45 left in the second quarter, Sategna caught a short pass and took off for the end zone, turning it into an 87-yard touchdown play that put the Sooners ahead 7-3.

Mateer connected with Javonnie Gibson for an 8-yard touchdown pass that extended the Sooners’ lead to 14-3. Following the Tigers second field goal, Oklahoma led 14-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, OU defensive back Reggie Powers III was ejected for targeting.

Tate Sandell kicked a 45-yard field goal to seal the win for the Sooners, and extend his school-record streak to 22 consecutive made field goals.

After the game, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables was asked what his team needs to do to prepare to face LSU this week.

“Show back up ready to go,” Venables said. “Renew your spirit, get your mind right. Enjoy tonight and stay humble, stay thankful, stay hungry and get ready to go back at it again here on Monday.”
