No. 15 Vanderbilt made a late game charge, but the Oklahoma Sooners were able to hold on to the lead for a one-point victory, 92-91, on Saturday in Nashville. OU snapped a nine-game losing streak, while the Commodores lost at home for only the second time this season.

Oklahoma improved to 12-12 overall and 2-9 in the SEC. Vanderbilt is now 19-4, 6-4 SEC.

The Sooners led by double digits for much of the game, including a 21-point lead in the second half, but had to hold off a late rally by Vanderbilt to secure the win. The Commodores’ comeback was helped in part by a handful of OU turnovers and missed free throws.

Xzayvier Brown put the Sooners ahead by four points with a pair of free throws with 3.4 seconds left, giving OU a 92-88 lead. Vandy’s Tyler Tanner banked in a 3-pointer at the final horn to account for the final one-point margin.

“I thought our guys played so well, for so long, and when you’ve lost the number of heartbreakers we’ve lost, in sports, you start to play not to lose,” OU head coach Porter Moser said after the game. “I thought for 35, 36 minutes we played really good basketball on the road against a Top-15 team.”

It was the first time since Feb. 13, 2021, that the Sooners beat an AP Top-15 team on the road. At that time, OU got past No. 14 West Virginia, 91-90.

The Sooners were led by their starting five, all of whom scored in double-digits. Brown had a team-high 20 points, including 14 in the second half, and was followed by Nijel Pack with 17, Tae Davis with 14, Dayton Forsythe (off the bench) with 12, Derrion Reid with 11 and Mohamed Wague with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Commodores were led by Tanner with a career-high 37 points, he made 14-of-18 free throws. Tyler Nickel added 18.

The Sooners committed 14 turnovers, their second most in SEC play. Vanderbilt had 13 turnovers. OU shot 53.4% from the field while Vandy shot 47.4%. The Sooners won the battle in the paint, 40-30.

OU does not have a midweek game this week and will host Georgia on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised by SEC Network.
