Oklahoma led for most of the second half, but West Virginia battled back to force overtime, and the Mountaineers beat the Sooners, 89-82, in the College Basketball Crown championship game on Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
OU won eight of its last 10 games and finished the season with a 21-16 record, its third straight campaign with at least 20 victories. West Virginia finished 21-14. The Sooners were looking for their first postseason tournament title in program history.
Oklahoma trailed by 15 points early in the game but came back to take a 41-37 lead into halftime. The Sooners led by seven points with 4:19 remaining in regulation, but West Virginia cut that lead and the two teams were tied, 76-76, going to overtime.
In the overtime period, OU jumped out to a quick lead, 82-76, and looked like they were in control of the game with 3:14 remaining. However, WVU wasn’t to be outdone.
The Mountaineers hit a three-pointer on an inbound play to cut the margin to three, before a blocked shot on OU’s next possession led to a WVU counterattack and another three-pointer that tied the game with 2:16 remaining. The Mountaineers went ahead for good with their third straight three-pointer with 1:23 to go, as OU’s shooting went cold and the Sooners missed their last five shot attempts.
For the Sooners, Nijel Pack was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 19.7 points in the three games. He recorded a team-high 24 points and a game-high seven assists. He went 4-for-8 from three-point range to finish his career with 436 three-pointers, 12th most in NCAA Division I history.
Tae Davis was also key for the Sooners throughout the tournament. He finished with 19 points, six boards, three assists and two steals in the title game. He averaged 18.7 points and went 18-for-20 from the free throw line during OU’s Vegas run.
Xzayvier Brown scored 13 points and four assists in the title game and averaged 17.0 points and 4.3 handouts for the week.
After registering single-digit turnovers in each of its five most recent games, OU committed 14 turnovers against the Mountaineers and was outscored 26-11 off turnovers. WVU also outscored the Sooners by 21 from 3-point range, going 15-for-33 (46%) from behind the arc to OU’s 8-for-20 (40%) effort.
The Sooners reached the Crown tournament final game by first getting past Colorado, 90-86, in overtime in the quarterfinals on April 1, and MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas. This put OU at the 20-win mark for the third straight season.
The Sooners were led by four players including Nijel Pack who scored a team-high 20 points, Tae Davis netted 19, Xzayvier Brown with 17 and Kuol Atak added 16.
Oklahoma then faced Baylor in the semifinals. The Sooners pulled away from Baylor down the stretch and won 82-69, at the T-Mobile Center, home of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights.
The Sooners outscored the Bears 19-8 over the final 6:18 of the game.
OU outshot Baylor 50%-39% from the field and scored 21 points off turnovers to win for the eighth time in nine contests.
For OU, Xzayvier Brown scored a game high 21 points and six assists, as well as a team-high six rebounds without committing a turnover in his 35-plus minutes of play. Tae Davis scored 18 points, Derrion Reid finished with 17 points and sixth-year guard Nijel Pack registered 15 points, four assists and three steals.
