The Tulsa Chapter of the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association will host “An Evening with South African National Hero Charl van Wyk” at 6:30 p.m. July 23 at the American Legion Post 1, 1120 E. 8th St. in Downtown Tulsa.
Van Wyk will talk about what happened when terrorists attacked his church in South Africa. Eleven people were shot dead and another 54 were wounded in a service with about a thousand people. Van Wyk was the only person in the church with a gun. He fired his revolver at the terrorists and they fled. Police said he saved hundreds of lives.
South Africa celebrates his bravery on the anniversary of his heroism every year. Admission to the event is free.
“Charl has a timely Word for America,” said Pastor Bruce Delay of Heartland Church in Tulsa.
Actor Chuck Norris said van Wyk’s book, Shooting Back: The Right and Duty of Self Defense, is “an excellent book which tells the story of how one man saved many lives in a congregation gathered in prayer – as well as answering some basic questions about church security.’
