Some California lawmakers want to make it easier for residents of that state to live in crowded conditions.
Senate Bill 50, by State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, would make it legal for any residential property or lot to be converted into a duplex, triplex or fourplex.
It hasn’t passed yet but if it does, it could destroy municipal zoning concepts and signal the end of single-family homes in that state.
The Democrats want to pack residents (not necessarily citizens) into high-density “sardine can” housing.
The bill is working its way through committees and considering the leftward lean of California Democrat legislators, it could become law.
This means that a normal-size house could be remodeled as a multi-family structure without going through the zoning process. Even though Americans should have a right to develop their property as they see fit, there are consequences to the neighbors. If you have a single-family home and all your neighbors convert to multi-family housing without any public input, the value of your single-family home could plummet. Plus, it would dramatically change your neighborhood, especially if the new structures are occupied by people who are in the country illegally – which is common in California.
This isn’t limited to California. In 2018, the City of Minneapolis approved a ban on single-family housing -forcing all new construction to be for multi-family housing only. Seattle and Portland are considering similar measures.
This is what happens in socialism. Cities are forcibly densified so that rulers can more easily control the population.
This is another effort by the left to alter life in America.
