[Analysis of history and science influence on political and religious attitudes.]
Alaska. Why would the top leader of the free-world and the communist world meet there? Last week President Trump of the United States and Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, met for private discussions. The event itself is historic, the location makes it intriguing.
During World War II, the countries were Allies primarily with Great Britain and free China against the Axis empires of Germany, Italy, and Japan. Germany capitulated in May 1945. After experiencing the atomic bombs, Japan said, ‘enough’ in August. The world was divided in Paris in 1947. Although a weak entity with little international influence, Russia was given control of eastern Europe as spoils of war.
The economy of Great Britain and France were decimated, so the citizens of the United States spent a fortune rebuilding western Europe and Japan to become economic powerhouses and mostly friendly competitors. In contrast, the totalitarian leaders of Russia sucked the lifeblood from their bloc of states in order to build a Russian military. Furnishing the military provided economic growth of the Russian economy. During this era, Russia and their Soviet Union were portrayed as the boogeyman. President Reagan understood the frailty of their economy and coerced them into a Star Wars military protection and arms race. The cost of the competition caused their economy to collapse, the Soviet Union to demise, and their global vassal states to separate.
Ukraine was part of that breakup in 1991, along with the other countries surrounding Russia. As a strongman leader of the Russian ‘shadow government’ Putin rose to influence and power in 1999. He mixed in a palatable blend of ‘Mother Russia’ loyalty, while permitting the Orthodox Church to again exert influence. Being strong and committed, with an element of good guy at home, led him to want to recover the portions of eastern Europe, which speak Russian, back into one federation. When countries are carved up by treaty or coercion, they often are an incompatible mix of cultures. For example, the Czech and Slovak republics separated, from one forced country. That is the issue of their neighbor Ukraine. These amalgamations are difficult, because the ethnicity, culture and language are different.
Europe and Ukraine would not agree to Putin and Russia’s desire to have the Russian speaking cousins, such as Crimea, to rejoin Mother Russia. What was plan B? The US had no moral or political authority with weak leadership since 2000. Europe had not financially supported the NATO defense coalition and had no significant military capability. So it looked like good timing for Putin to flex his limited resources to grab back his countrymen relatives. The action was supported by a complicit ‘shadow government’ in the US, which funneled money via war to corrupt politicians and bureaucrats, based on recent validated revelations.
Then along comes outsider President Trump, who believes everything can be negotiated. As has been documented in recent weeks, a hoax called ‘Russia, Russia, Russia’ was perpetrated on the US by the shadow government. Presidents Putin and Trump have both said as much. “The Ukraine war would not have happened with Trump as President.”
It will not be easy realigning the boundaries for the umpteenth time in Ukraine. Like it or not, Ukraine leaders and many noisy in the US are getting a lesson in history. Ukraine borders need to be redrawn to cultural alliances for any semblance of stability. President Putin wants out of another forever war. Ukraine people want out. The white-hat President wants a deal to stop the killing of over a million. Who does not? It appears the opposition is largely from the same as generated the ‘Russia, Russia’ hoax and their acolytes.
Why was the summit at a US joint base as far from Washington as possible? Many reasons jump out. The US bought Alaska from Russia by a friendly negotiation in 1867. There is no better secure place in the world, limiting danger to the principals. President Trump could make his show of force with a flyover by a B2 stealth bomber and four F35 stealth fighter escorts. The Presidents walked from their planes on the red carpet by F22 fighters on the tarmac. I have seen the difference in workmanship between Russian and US fighters. The quality is not missed.
The biggest reason is security. Anywhere else in the world, the deep state players from both countries could and have penetrated with their espionage. At Elemendorf, the six negotiators and a translator had total privacy with virtually zero chance of unintentional leaks.
Think about it. History gives a backstory to any conflict. Negotiation is not easy with so much at stake. Putin has an agenda. Trump wants a deal. Both want joint participation in the economic boom going on in the US. Check the source of opposition to a settlement. It will not be altruism.
