Tulsa, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are losing football players to the transfer portal and gaining players.

Shane Illingworth, OSU’s  backup quarterback, has entered the transfer portal. A sophomore, he would have three years of eligibility at a new school.

This leaves OSU with starter Spencer Sanders, Gunnar Gundy (son of coach Mike Gundy), walk-on Peyton Thompson (from Union High School) and early enrollee Garret Rangel, a four-star quarterback.

“We’re gonna have kids go on the portal,” Mike Gundy said. “You’ll have some guys that aren’t starters that maybe are in their third or fourth year that want to be a starter which is that’s what the portal is good for.

“The portal is great for young men to  to jump on there. (They  think) ‘I’ve been  here and busted my butt but I want to go to  some school and be a starter.’ I think it’s awesome. So I’m sure we’ll have two or three kids but we’re not going to have many that just jump on there because of that situation and i think it’s because we tell them the truth.”
