President Harry Truman was not “voted out of office.” In 1952, he became so unpopular because  of The Korean War, called a Police Action, the Truman war. He knew he would never be re-elected. The Republicans chose the popular General Eisenhower (Ike)  who campaigned on the slogan “I will go to Korea” and he won by a landslide; He did go to Korea and an armistice was signed in 1953.

As Vice President with FDR, Truman became President in 1944 when President Roosevelt died, making all the big decisions in ending WW2.

In 1948, I remember  him  campaigning at the bus depot in St. Paul, Minnesota; I was within hearing distance and people were shouting: “Give him Hell Harry, Give him Hell.’ His Comment: “No, being a good Baptist I can’t do that, but I can  tell the truth and that’s worse.” . . .

In November of 1948 , I voted for President Truman; The polls showed his Republican opponent Thomas Dewey winning the election and the Chicago Tribune published in advance a head-line “Dewey Wins” when the final count showed Dewey lost. It was the closest Presidential election in history. In a close election, there can be dozens of different reasons for the outcome. One today given in Marketing Research Textbooks teaches that Dewey would have won if he would have been close-shaven; His mustache cost him to lose by “a whisker.” (True)

I served in the Infantry in Korea, surviving some of the worst fighting in the April 21-23, 1951 Spring Offensive and in the battle of Chorwon on June 10th of 1951 when I played a significant role as radio operator after my superiors were downed by wounds.

The Korean War was one of the bloodiest wars we ever fought and one of the most important in keeping us from a WW3 for 70 years.

In retrospect, I believe President Truman to be one of our greatest presidents motivated by God of the Bible which he had read 3 times cover-to cover by  the time he was 12…          As president and Commander in  Chief, he took his responsibility seriously, acknowledging “The Buck stops_here.”

On  April 11 , 19 5 1,  while in Puson Harbor, Korea, l got word that President Truman had just fired the popular General Douglas MacArthur, as a preventative to WW3 with China .

Truman did what he believed was right and not what was popular.
