One of the most serious decisions by a president is to send our troops overseas in harm’s way.

President Donald Trump said when he ran for office that he was going to stop the endless undeclared wars that were fostered by former presidents.

Trump was correct in withdrawing our forces from Syria.

Syria is a giant warzone. It’s a nation that is embroiled in a civil war that could continue indefinitely.

When the U.S. troops left, Turkey invaded and attacked the Kurds, who have been military allies. Trump has levied economic sanctions against Turkey to force a ceasefire.

Democrats and the liberal media constantly criticized former President George W. Bush for our military actions in the Middle East. Now, due to their hatred of Trump, they are blasting him for stopping a deployment that they campaigned heavily against.

When the U.S. military deploys in a war zone:

  • It should be to protect our national security or assist an ally;
  • There should be a specific goal and an exit strategy; and,
  • There should be a declaration of war passed by Congress.

None of these three factors apply to the civil war in Syria. The lives of American soldiers were in jeopardy for what? The Kurds are Communists. They don’t share our national values. Our only connection was a common enemy – al Qaeda and ISIS. Turkey, a member of NATO, is an ally.

America does play a role in stabilizing that part of the world but having troops in Syria is an unnecessary risk.

And once again, President Trump, unlike Bush or Barack Obama, is true to his campaign rhetoric.
