After what looked like three good quarters of football, the University of Tulsa offense went cold and South Florida came from behind to beat the Golden Hurricane, 25-24, Friday night in front of 16,142 fans at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

Tulsa (1-5, 0-3 AAC) scored a touchdown and a field goal in the first half, and led 10-3 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bulls (6-0, 2-0 AAC) tied the game on a 66-yard touchdown run by Jordan Cronkite, who ran up 151 yards rushing in the game.

The Golden Hurricane regained the lead with 6:04 remaining in the third quarter as Shamari Brooks carried the ball 10 yards for a touchdown.  On Tulsa’s next possession, Brooks finished off an 88-yard drive with another 10-yard scoring run that gave the Hurricane a 24-10 lead with 1:00 left in the third quarter.

Brooks totaled 100 yards rushing and it was his seventh career 100-plus-yard rushing game. He scored his 15th and 16th rushing touchdowns of his career.

However, that was all the offense for TU.

USF scored on a one-yard Blake Barnett run, at the 7:10 mark of the fourth quarter, but the extra point kick was blocked by Tulsa’s Jaxon Player, making the score 24-16. The Bulls followed that score with a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive to cut Tulsa’s lead to two points at 24-22. The Bulls attempted two-point conversion that was stopped by the Hurricane defense.

The Bulls covered 52 yards on their final possession, setting up Coby Weiss’ 22-yard, game-winning, field goal with two seconds left on the clock.

“Pretty tough one to swallow,” said Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery after the game. “I thought our guys played extremely hard and I thought that for the most part, we controlled that game. Take your hat off to South Florida. Good football team, obviously, No. 23 team in the nation.”

USF totaled 487 yards of offense while TU had 299 total yards.

Tulsa quarterback Seth Boomer completed 6-of-12 passes for 79 yards, and one touchdown pass to Jarion Anderson.

Montgomery said although Tulsa got beat by a really good team, he was still very happy with the way his team played.

“I can promise you I’m proud of our men that are down in the locker room, with the effort and the attitude that they’re playing with and we’re right there,” he said. “Got to continue to keep working, continue to keep finishing…but very, very proud of our men in the locker room. And we got a big game next week that we got to get up and get ready to play. But I don’t think I can ask any more out of them than what they gave tonight.”

Tulsa will play a non-conference game this Saturday as the Golden Hurricane travel to Fayetteville for an 11 a.m. kickoff with the Arkansas Razorbacks. Arkansas is 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the SEC.
