In a competitive game from start to finish, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane battled the Temple Owls, but in the end, Temple came away with a 38-37 overtime win on Saturday, at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa’s 100th Homecoming game. It was the highest scoring game this season for the Golden Hurricane.

Tulsa dropped to 2-6, 0-5 in the AAC, while Temple improved to 5-3, 3-1 AAC.

“I’m really proud of our team and really proud of our efforts,” said Tulsa head coach Tre Lamb. “I though we played much better complimentary today. It was a really good football game.”

In the first quarter, Tulsa’s Seth Morgan kicked a 36-yard field goal, putting the team ahead 3-0 midway through the quarter.

On Temple’s first possession, Evan Simon threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kajiya Hollawayne and the Owls took a 7–3 lead.

Midway through the second quarter, Simon connected with Jay Ducker for a one-yard touchdown pass increasing Temple’s lead to 14–3.

The Golden Hurricane responded with an eight-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a five-yard touchdown run by Brody Foley with 5:20 left in the second quarter. Late in the quarter, Tulsa’s Baylor Hayes connected with Foley on an eight-yard touchdown pass with just three seconds left on the clock and Tulsa led 17–14 at halftime.

Temple opened the third quarter with a scoring drive, as Simon again found an open Hollawayne for a 13-yard touchdown pass and the Owls took a 21–17 lead.

On the next TU drive, Hayes threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Grayson Tempest to give the Hurricane the lead, 24–21.

Temple answered with a six-yard touchdown pass from Simon to Hollawayne with 4:13 left in the third, and the Owls took the lead, 28–24.

In the fourth quarter, Temple’s Carl Hardin kicked a career-long 52-yard field goal to extend their lead to 31-24.

Tulsa responded with a 75-yard, seven-play drive that was capped by Dominic Richardson’s one-yard touchdown run, tying the game, 31-31, with 3:44 left to play in regulation.

In overtime, Temple began with the first possession and Simon completed a 24-yard pass to Colin Chase, advancing to Tulsa’s 1-yard line. Then Simon connected with Hollawayne for the third time in the game, scoring a touchdown plus the extra-point kick was good, giving Temple a 38-31 lead.

On Tulsa’s first OT possession, Hayes connected with Foley for a nine-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the gap to 38-37. However, Tulsa’s attempt to win the game with a two-point pass play to Foley failed, sealing the victory for Temple.

“It came down to one play,” Lamb said. “We had it set up with the tight end pop pass, and he’s open, and we missed it. It’s not Brody’s fault…We had it set up. We ran the power play three times in the game. We knew in a critical moment we were going to come back to the pop pass and it just happened to start raining and it slipped out of his hand to end the game there.”

Hayes completed 19-of-31 passes for a career high 296 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing 12 times for 18 yards. Richardson carried the ball 19 times, gaining 78 yards and scoring a touchdown. Foley contributed with three total touchdowns, including two receiving and one rushing. Josh Smith set a career high with 112 receiving yards, contributing significantly to Tulsa’s offense.

“I’m really proud of our quarterback,” Lamb said. “Baylor’s a really good football player and I think he showed up today, he gave us a chance.”

Temple’s Simon completed 24-of-35 passes for 267 yards and five touchdowns. Hollawayne led the team with 10 receptions for 85 yards and three touchdowns.

Tulsa will have this weekend off before traveling to face Florida Atlantic on Saturday, November 8, at Flagler Credit Union Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla. The game time and television broadcast have not been determined yet.
