Tulsa put on an amazing show on Saturday at H.A. Chapman Stadium, as the Golden Hurricane ran away with a 44-10 win over the Temple Owls, in front of 16,731 fans.

It was senior night and 25 seniors on the Tulsa roster were honored before the game. Eighteen of those seniors have already received their degrees and have been working this semester toward a second degree or a master’s.

“You know, senior night, I thought our guys handled all that emotion pretty well,” said Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery after the game. “This group has done a lot for our program. Lots of reasons we wanted to come out and play well. That obviously was kind of up at the top of the list.”

Five different Tulsa players scored touchdowns in the game, while Zack Long kicked three field goals of 44, 47, and 48 yards.

“Zach has been a highlight for us really over the past two seasons,” Montgomery said of the team’s kicker. “He’s such a special story; a guy that’s never played football before. Walked on for us and just continued to work at his craft and get better when he got the opportunity.”

TU outgained Temple in total offensive yards, as the Golden Hurricane tallied 513 total yards of offense, while holding the Owls to only 293 total yards.

“So really proud of the way our team played, these seniors, and what they’ve done,” Montgomery said. “That’s probably our most, in my opinion, at least without looking at the tape, probably our most complete game as a team offensively, defensively, and special teams.”

The Golden Hurricane stopped Temple on the Owls first drive, then quickly went up the field and scored on a 21-yard pass from Davis Brin to JuanCarlos Santana. With 3:35 left in the first quarter Zack Long kicked a 44-yard field goal, giving Tulsa a 10-0 lead.

Brin connected with Josh Johnson on an eight-yard touchdown pass with 12:44 left in the second quarter, and on the next Tulsa drive, Long kicked a 47-yard field goal putting the Golden Hurricane ahead 20-0.

Before the end of the first half, Steven Anderson carried the ball two yards into the end zone, and Tulsa led 27-0 at the intermission.

The Owls got their first points of the game when Rory Bell kicked a 33-yard field goal, with 8:40 left in the third quarter.

Tulsa didn’t slow up in the second half, as they did last week at Tulane. This time, the Golden Hurricane kept playing well throughout the game and never let up.

“I thought we did a good job of continuing to keep our foot on the gas, continuing to have that momentum,” Montgomery said. “I thought we handled it better than probably what we did last week. You know, the week before at Tulane we started off very similar to what we did this week, but I thought our guys really locked in, stayed focused, took advantage of opportunities when we had them, and stayed aggressive with it and I thought that paid off.”

Brin capped a five-play, 68-yard drive with a one-yard dive into the end zone, to put Tulsa ahead 34-3 with 7:29 left in the third quarter.

Following a 23-yard touchdown pass play by Temple, the Golden Hurricane iced the game in the fourth quarter with the third field goal of the game for Long and a seven-yard touchdown run by Deneric Prince.

“Now, like I’ve said the last several weeks, for us, we feel like we’re controlling our own destiny, and so trying to be 1-0 each week,” Montgomery said. “I thought we did a good job of that today. We set ourselves up for a really good matchup come next week when we’ve got to travel to Dallas and play SMU and try to get bowl eligible.”

Tulsa now has an overall record of 5-6 (4-3 in American Athletic Conference play), needs to get to six wins to be eligible for a bowl game invitation. Temple dropped to 3-8 (1-6).

Tulsa will play its final regular season game Saturday in Dallas, at SMU with a 3:00 p.m. kickoff, broadcast on ESPN2.
