University of Tulsa Football Coach Philip Montgomery said the Golden Hurricane added three high school seniors to its signing class for a total of 17 newcomers for 2022 on February 2.

Tulsa added Oklahoman Kyron Grayson, a defensive back from Beggs, and two players from the state of Texas, including defensive lineman Vontroy Malone and tight end Connor Vaughn. Each of the three signees add to the length and speed that Montgomery’s recruiting classes have targeted.

“We have some things that have paid dividends for us in the past in recruiting and we continue to go that mode. These guys fit that mold. These are guys that all fit that. They have length, athleticism, can bend, can move. We’re trying to continue to add really good talent and guys that we can continue to develop and have high ceilings to what they do,” said Montgomery.

Grayson, a 6-1 defensive back, played receiver and cornerback at Beggs High School and recorded 30 tackles and eight interceptions his senior season. He returned three of the pickoffs for touchdowns.

Malone is a 6-5 defensive end from Brazoswood (Texas) High School, where he had 152 tackles, 35 TFL and 15 sacks in three seasons. He totaled 58 tackles, 11 QB hurries and 10 sacks his senior season.

Vaughn, a 6-5 tight end, caught 28 passes for 438 yards as a senior at Marcus (Texas) High School as a senior.

In total, Tulsa signed nine players on the offensive side of the ball, seven on defense and one long snapper during the two signing periods. Offensively, Tulsa welcomes five receivers, two linemen, one tight end and one quarterback. On defense, the Hurricane added three linemen, two defensive backs and two linebackers.

“As a whole, I’m really exciting about this class with the signees in December, some mid-year transfers and the additions today. With what we’ve added on both sides of the ball and special teams I thought we attacked some of the needs we had, and attacked it with getting good players,” said Montgomery.  “These are guys that have great length, can attack the field, whether that’s as a receiver stretching the field and being dynamic with the ball in their hands, or as a defensive back being able to cover up guys and cover ground making the field seem small.”

“We’ve added guys on the defensive line that will be able to get pressure on the quarterback, and on the offensive line we added depth.

”The linebackers we signed add length and speed as well. Overall, I think this is a very talented class and a class that will make waves when the get here.”
