Twenty years ago, the Biggs Family founded the Tulsa Beacon newspaper because liberal commentary and fake news was dominating the news market in Tulsa.

That was especially true about the Tulsa World.

Ever since the 1980s, big cities started getting rid of large, competing daily newspapers. In Tulsa, the Tulsa World purchased the Tulsa Tribune in 1992 and promptly closed its doors.

That cut the local reporting staff almost in half and curtailed the natural competition that had existed between the two papers.

The reporting staff of the Tulsa World viewed that as elimination of their main competition and that opened the doors to the blending of liberal politics with straight news coverage, much to the dismay of Tribune readers and to any newspaper subscribers who hold to traditional values or just want to read the news without progressive comment.

The Tulsa Beacon was started to provide straight news, conservative editorials, Christian columnists and content that is consistent with the family values Tulsa used to be known for.

That is why the Tulsa Beacon is “Tulsa’s Family Newspaper.”

The growth that was anticipated for the Tulsa Beacon in 2001 never materialized because the of overall decline of the newspaper industry, the loss of interest in newspapers by younger adults and the rise of social media. Yet, the Tulsa Beacon continues to have strong support from a smaller group of loyal advertisers and faithful readers.

We are grateful. Staying with anything for 20 years in our culture could be considered an accomplishment.

As newspapers, TV stations and the Interest become more slanted, less honest and more intolerant, the Tulsa Beacon will carry on with our mission – deliver the news with a dedication to the truth and in service to our Lord Jesus Christ.
