The Tulsa men’s basketball team held off the Charlotte 49ers 69-63 for Tulsa’s second conference win of the season Sunday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
With the win, Tulsa improves to 8-9 on the season and 2-2 in The American Athletic Conference. Charlotte falls to 7-10 and is 0-4 in the AAC.
“That was a total team effort by our team,” Tulsa head coach Eric Konkol said. “It was a very hard fought American Athletic Conference game. It was physical and I thought both teams left it all on the floor and was playing really, really hard. As I told our team in the locker room, I thought our energy to start the game on the defensive end – it wasn’t just the five guys on the floor – the bench, just the enthusiasm and determination of our group got us off to a good start.”
Less than two minutes into the first half, Tulsa took a 5-4 lead and never looked back. The Tulsa lead was never larger than 13 points as the Niners battled to keep it close.
Tulsa’s Dwon Odom led all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-14 (71.4 percent) shooting, with six rebounds and five assists. Keaston Willis, Jared Garcia and Tyshawn Archie each scored 11 for TU.
Charlotte was led by Nik Graves with 19 and Kyland Blackmon with 18. Robert Braswell added 10 and Giancarlo Rosado pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Niners.
Tulsa shot 52.9 percent from the field and just 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) on 3-pointers. Charlotte connected on 22-of-49 shot attempts for 44.9 percent.
Tulsa also won the battle of the boards 33-24 and turned six offensive rebounds into 13 second chance points.
The Golden Hurricane will be on the road this Saturday to play at South Florida.
