Tulsa’s shooting went cold in the final few minutes, allowing South Florida to come from behind and win, 63-56, at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Saturday afternoon.
Tulsa was leading 54-44 with 4:53 remaining in the game, before USF outscored Tulsa 19-2 in the final minutes. During that stretch, the Golden Hurricane turned the ball over six times, missed three free throws and went 1-6 from the field.
Tulsa had a total of 15 turnovers in the game, that USF converted into 20 points. The Bulls had 11 turnovers, for eight TU points.
Tulsa was riding a two-game winning streak coming into this one, and now the Golden Hurricane are 8-10 overall and 2-3 in The American. South Florida improved to 10-8 and 3-2 in league play and ended a two-game losing streak.
Justin Amadi and Keaston Willis led Tulsa in scoring, recording 14 and 12 points, respectively. Amadi also led Tulsa with seven rebounds.
For the game, Tulsa shot 39.6 from the field, while USF was 35.5 percent. The Golden Hurricane outshot the Bulls from behind the 3-point line, 23.8 to 11.1 percent. Tulsa knocked down five 3-pointers to South Florida’s two, but the second came at an opportune time to put the Bulls ahead by five with 25 seconds remaining.
The Bulls had four players in double figures, led by C.J. Brown with 16 points. Kobe Knox added 12 off the bench, and Jayden Reid and De’Ante Green each scored 11. Green led the team with eight rebounds.
The Golden Hurricane struggled at the free throw line, making only 9-of-22 free throws for 40.9 percent. South Florida made 17-of-25 from the line (68.0).
Tulsa will host Wichita State this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Reynolds Center.
