Radical progressives are running America’s social media platforms and they are squashing free speech of anyone who opposes their liberal ideology.

While platforms like Twitter and Facebook should not be censored by the government, they should be accountable when they damage free speech. That’s why President Trump issued an executive order that ends protection for social media platforms that censor opposing views.

Previously, you couldn’t sue a platform if someone posted a libelous statement. But under Trump’s order, platforms who selectively edit, censor, or are not acting in “good faith” with regards to content will not receive the liability protection included in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

His order instructs the Commerce Department to petition the FCC to make clarifying rules on Section 230 in line with U.S. policy. There’s an economic impact for stopping free speech. The order will save millions of taxpayer dollars from being wasted by federal agencies on advertising with biased social media platforms.

The Justice Department has more than 16,000 complaints about politically motivated censorship and those will be thoroughly reviewed. The order also assists the State Attorneys General in their work to uncover unfair or deceptive actions by social platforms.

The United States of America is one of the very few nations with free speech. As these social platforms gain enormous influence, they must accept the responsibility for fairness and impartiality.

These platforms have had special status and they have abused that privilege. Trump rightly opened the door to greater accountability to curb the activism of companies who have pledged to be politically “neutral.”
